So just a week after graduation I took a oil painting color class with the great Bill Perkins. Not only was it a joy to work in oil again, but Bill helped me to start thinking about color in a whole new way (I hope). Most of it was doing 40 minute studies from setups that he created using different lighting situations to highlight different color concepts. Here's a few of the better examples from his class. Apparently I have forgotten how to properly photograph oil paintings.

Ok, I've been promising an update for a while, so here's the grad update. That's right. I am now an official graduate of the Art Center College of Design, yaddayaddayadda. I busted my butt, I made a wall, and I got a job. Now begins my lifelong journey to ruling the animation world while simultaneously being a outdoorsy bum living out of my car. ... It'll be an interesting next couple of years anyways.
SO. Art. This was the totality of my wall. For my story, I took the ballet Swan Lake, tweaked it so that it was more character-driven and less boring, then set the whole shebang in ancient Mughal India. The main characters are as follows: Vanhi, the flirtatious princess. Sitara, her shy handmaiden. Dyanesh, a noble prince from a neighboring empire. and a demon who inhabits the body of a young courtier named Kuber. I painted 6 keyscenes and 4 characters. I already want to redo most of it.
and the characters:
and now on to things that don't involve classes, tuition, or long saturday nights spent in the computer labs. ..supposedly.

OK, I decided to show some of my senior project stuff, mainly cause it's not done yet, sooo i'm not really giving anything away. Vanhi is a flirty Indian princess and Sitara is her handmaiden. These two took weeks of re-working. And then I painted Batman (he's not part of my senior show). Which was more fun? I'll let you guess...
Vanhi

The colored character designs from Willow in Africa and the final painting from the Subtle Knife project. I've been redesigning the characters from the group Centrion project and will be posting those as soon as I get the incidental characters done. I may not ever be able to oust Carter Goodritch, but dammit, my life is dedicated to trying.

Attempts to stylize landscape. Some are successful, some aren't. After training so long in traditional practices, it's hard to break out and push shapes so dramatically. I can see how my traditional knowledge informs my stylized work, but it's hard to push it further.
I also updated my online portfolio at http://astods.carbonmade.com/ Check it out!

I love it when it rains in LA.
Quick dump in the middle of a tough week. I have a bunch of landscape paintings, but they need to be cleaned up and made pretty, so no trees for you tonight. Instead, you get characters and props. the colored ones were designed for The Subtle Knife and the uncolored ones are from a personal/class story.
Enjoy!

Week 10! I think..? Maybe. Could be. A month till I'm home in the cold and snow. Sweet. One more from Background Painting (which I always have to put characters in), one from Image & Idea, done to illustrate an article about "black swans" (a high-impact, low probability event) and two photographs from the pinhole camera project for Light & Color (a physics class for artists. electrons are fierce.) Enjoy. Looking forward to doing something other than homework in my life.

I've been watching LotR while working, and have come to a sad conclusion: those movies take themselves way way too seriously. Also, Frodo is the most emo hero ever. That said, I still love 'em.
Anyway, a hodge-podge of arts for you today. First up and most recent, two layouts I'm working on in VisDev. They are two different viewpoints of a beaver dam that's blocking the river upstream from Jethro's fields. But Spanky the beaver is very satisfied with his work. As I spent a good portion of my break hauling canoes over endless beaver dams, I felt rather prepared for this project.

Well here I thought I'd have time to make all my images neat and pretty for you guys, organize them into classes and all before the new term started. Aaaaand term has already started. Whoops. Soooo, here's a bunch of presentable stuff from summer term. Enjoy it!
First some characters from Inventive Character. I did Snow White set in ancient Egypt. You'll notice that Snow White herself is actually missing from this set, but that's because I redid the design and haven't finished it yet.. but first, the Evil Queen:

Some more from-life paintings from advanced sketching. Props must be given to Alex for trying so hard to fill Gary's shoes. I'm still having troubles getting motivated on the homework tho..

Ok, I love Alex Schaeffer, but I took this class for Gary. Here's hoping he gets better quickly and comes back before the term is over. Go Gary go!

Some sketches for a young Snow White set in Egypt. Better ones coming... eventually.
First sitting in Advanced Sketching for Illustration. Here's hoping Gary Meyer can come back, cause there's no words for how awesome he is.

Alright alright, remember that time I said I'd update? Well I updated the stuff from last term that I liked, then.. um.. yah forgot about the other stuff. Cause I didn't really like it. But maybe if I post it, smart people can tell me *why* I don't like it, and then I can make it better.
That's the idea anyway.
So, my final digital landscape paintings, minus a few that really are quite awful;

Well I'm on the move, as I like to do when I'm not tied down to school. I find a nice balance in spending my breaks going/doing where i want to go/do when i want to go/do them. In other words, I blow town and stay away as long as possible, living out of a backpack and far away from LA. This time I'm haunting northern Arizona and southern Utah for while, with inclinations towards San Francisco later on. I'll slowly update from the term as I go. today's lucky visitors get the final installment of the Peter Pan key scenes and the title banner from the final board. The key scene is my version of the point in the story when Pan is mimicking the tiger (crocodile) to frighten Hook.
